Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is a public research university located in Sylhet, Bangladesh. It is the world’s oldest 8th university and the first university to adopt the American credit system. The university is known for its pioneering research and education in physical science and engineering. In 2016, SUST was ranked as the top research university in Bangladesh (610th in the world) by the position of Scopus-SCImago institute. In 2017, the university had the highest cost of research at all universities in Bangladesh. Following the success of SUST, twelve STEM universities have been established in the country by the Government of Bangladesh.
SUST was established in 1986. The center is located in Kumargaon, about six miles from the heart of the Sylhet City Center. The university started its study program in three departments: physics, chemistry and economics. Prominent scientist and lecturer Dr. Sadruddin Ahmed Chowdhury was the first Vice-Chancellor at the university. The first SUST meeting was held on April 29, 1998 and the second was held on 6 December 2007 when the third meeting was held on Jan 8, 2020. Currently, SUST has 7,662 students, 487 academic staff and 772 administrators; which means the university has 6.09 students per staff.
SUST is the first university in Bangladesh that offers full Wi-fi access for students and staff. The university presented an integrated honors course for the first time in Bangladesh and also introduced a semester (American credit program) from the 1996-97 program. In 2019, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) allocated BDT 9.88 billion (USD 117 million) for 20 SUST development projects.
SUST students have developed and introduced a paperless Admission 24/7 registration process for the first time in Bangladesh. Interested students can complete the registration process via mobile phone messages. The current government launched the program on 13 September 2009. In launching this, the University won the Ambillion Award in the South Asian competition in 2010 and the National E-Content and ICT for Development Award 2010. Now, most of the public universities in Bangladesh have accepted this registration process.
Ranking and reputation
SUST puts the highest priority on research. In 2017, the university spent ৳ 137 million (the US $ 1.6 million) in research; the highest cost of research among all the universities of Bangladesh, almost double that of the second.
In 2016, SUST was ranked as the top research university in Bangladesh (610th in the world) by the position of Scopus-SCImago institute. In 2019, it is ranked 337th in Asia and 610th in the world among 3,471 higher education institutions. SUST is ranked 445th for research and 493rd for innovation in the world. In 2015, World University Webmometry ranks SUST as the top university in Bangladesh.
In 2018, the team from SUST became world champion of the NASA Space Apps Challenge among the 1,395 successful local teams from around the world. At the International Theoretical Physics Olympiad 2019, seven teams from SUST earned a place among the last 88 and ranked 15th in the world (the highest achievement of Asian University).
Schools and departments
SUST is the first public university to offer undergraduate programs in Software Engineering in Bangladesh. It is the second time in the country to introduce engineering education in the fields of Chemical, Computer Science, Industrial & Production, Petroleum & Mining.
